You put in a water softener and now the shower feels weaker. Some pressure drop across any softener is normal, so a small change isn’t cause for alarm. A big, obvious drop is different. That usually means something in the setup isn’t right, and most of the causes are straightforward to check. Here’s how to tell normal from a real problem.
A little pressure loss is expected
Water has to flow through the softener’s resin tank and control valve to get treated. That path adds some resistance, so you lose a few pounds per square inch (psi) across the unit. On a properly sized system that’s small enough that most people don’t notice it in daily use.
The number to watch is how much you lost. A drop of a few psi is normal. A drop large enough that your shower, faucets, or appliances clearly struggle is not, and it’s worth diagnosing.
The common causes of a big drop
The softener is undersized. This is the most common real cause. If the unit is too small for your home’s peak flow, it can’t pass enough water when several fixtures run at once. A family of four running a shower, the dishwasher, and laundry at the same time needs a softener sized to that peak demand. San Diego’s very hard water, commonly 15 to 28 or more grains per gallon, makes correct sizing matter even more, because an undersized unit is already working hard.
A clogged sediment prefilter. Many installs put a sediment filter ahead of the softener. When that cartridge loads up with grit, pressure drops fast. Swapping the cartridge often restores pressure on its own, and it’s the first thing to check.
Fouled or clogged resin. Over time, iron, sediment, or a resin bed that’s breaking down can restrict flow through the tank. This shows up as a gradual pressure decline rather than a sudden one after install.
The bypass valve is partly closed. Softeners have a bypass valve so the unit can be isolated for service. If it didn’t get fully opened after install or maintenance, you’ll feel it as reduced pressure. This is a quick thing to verify.
A stuck or failing control valve. The valve that routes water through the softener can stick or fail, restricting flow. This one usually needs a technician.
A pre-existing pressure issue the softener exposed. Sometimes the home already had marginal pressure, and adding any resistance in the line made it noticeable. In that case the softener didn’t cause the problem, it revealed it.
How to check it yourself
You can narrow this down before calling anyone.
Test your pressure with a gauge that screws onto a hose bib, once with the softener in service and once in bypass. If pressure jumps back up in bypass, the issue is at or after the softener. If it stays low in bypass too, the problem is elsewhere in the house or at the meter.
Check the bypass valve is fully open. It’s a simple miss that causes a lot of service calls.
Check or replace the sediment prefilter if you have one. A loaded cartridge is cheap to swap and a frequent culprit.
Note whether the drop was sudden after install (points to sizing, bypass, or a plumbing choice) or gradual over months (points to a clogged filter or fouling resin).
When it’s a repair or sizing problem
If the bypass is open, the prefilter is fresh, and pressure still drops hard through the unit, you’re likely looking at an undersized system, fouled resin, or a valve problem. Those are repair or replacement questions, not DIY fixes.
An undersized softener is the frustrating case, because the unit may work fine on hardness while never keeping up with flow. The fix is matching the system to your home’s real peak demand, which comes back to sizing it against your actual water and household use.
