Method 1: the soap-shake bottle test

Method 2: DIY hardness test strips

Dip the strip in a fresh sample of tap water for the number of seconds specified on the package, pull it out, and match the color change against the chart on the bottle within the timeframe listed, usually 15 to 45 seconds, since colors keep shifting after that window.

You fill a small vial with a measured water sample, then add a reagent drop by drop, swirling after each one, until the water changes color, from red to blue in most kits. You count the drops it took, and each drop typically equals one grain per gallon of hardness.

This method takes a little more patience than a test strip, maybe two or three minutes per sample, but it gives you a specific gpg number rather than a color-matched range. It’s the method a lot of water treatment professionals use for a quick field reading before recommending equipment sizing.

Method 4: read your water utility’s Consumer Confidence Report
